After working as an Information Technology professional for over fifteen years, Catherine Poirier’s career, like many women’s, took a backseat to motherhood. While Catherine embraced her role as a stay-at-home-parent, she envisioned a future role as an entrepreneur. While rocking her second child and watching The View, Catherine found inspiration from a guest, who had created a novel product and was experiencing nationwide success. Why not Catherine? Her entrepreneurial drive was immediately fueled by this broadcast.
Weeks later, as Catherine was primping for a Halloween party, inspiration struck. She could not find a long sleeve top to wear underneath a scratchy sweater without the top being seen, a recurring routine that she was accustomed to each fall. Catherine realized that she needed a fashionable, but invisible layer to wear underneath sweaters. Voila! The idea of Body Bark was born.
Nothing in the marketplace met Catherine’s criteria for invisibility, design and texture. With her mother-in-law Maureen, Catherine devoted countless hours to research, fabric testing, pattern design and sewing. The most versatile, luxurious fabric that surpassed their expectations was made from the cellulose fiber of sustainable Beech trees--MicroModal® of Lenzing Ag. This incredibly soft fabric had the best color resilience, durability, and shape retention. The end result was the perfect softly sophisticated stand-alone top or layering piece: Body Bark.
From day one, Catherine wanted to offer the highest-quality workmanship and also support the United States manufacturing industry. Body Bark products proudly display a “Made in the USA” tag. Body Bark’s customers quickly embraced the product’s versatility as an invisible layer, visible layer, stand alone or even reversible neckline top. Since the original line of versatile tops was launched the line has expanded to a variety of tops, bottoms and intimates. It is truly an Everyday, EveryWear brand for today’s discerning woman.
Why “Body Bark”?
Given that the apparel line is derived from sustainable beech trees, it seemed appropriate to incorporate that natural aspect into the brand name. A family brainstorming night inspired Catherine with the “Body Bark” name and visions of a ‘tree lady’. Body Bark speaks to the eco-heritage and protective properties of the line, while the logo exudes the grace, sophistication, and sensuality of the fabric.
